Drugs and alcohol are only a temporary solution to your problems. Maybe you’ve lost relationships, lack meaning in your life or have lost hope. Here are some useful tips to help you manage your addiction.

Avoid Triggers

Staying away from friends who abuse drugs or alcohol is a vital part of addiction management. They may be fun to hang out with, but will only lead you down the wrong path in the long run. Clubs and bars should be avoided, since you’ll likely find your supplies here. Seek advice of a trusted doctor on which prescription drugs you should stay away from. Distract yourself from cravings by doing a hobby, reading a book, exercising or visiting friends or family members.

Seek Support

Sometimes everyone needs someone to support them through tough times. Talk through your problems with a family member or friend who cares about your feelings or speak to a therapist you can trust. Consider the benefits of living in a sober living home. Find sober friends by taking a class or joining a church group. Attend events in your community that provide value to your life. Instead, do positive activities to have a real life you’ll want to remember. Consider volunteering for an organization that needs your help. Have Healthy Relationships

Learn how to identify the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, and keep appropriate boundaries. Toxic people tend to manipulate, control and exploit people. This can be a friend, family member or distant acquaintance. Genuine people like you as yourself. They have positive goals and make an effort each day towards self-improvement. You absolutely need to be able to trust any people you have a relationship with.

Commit to Goals

Sticking to your goals requires dedication, positivity and perseverance. You can do this by writing the details in a daily journal. Consider asking a good friend or family member to hold you accountable and provide encouragement. Having a plan can make it easier to see the bigger picture. Take control of your own life by being responsible. Inspire yourself by reading books or news articles about people who’ve changed their lives for the better.

It’s important to manage your addiction before it destroys your hopes and dreams. Taking small steps towards your goals can make a big difference in your day-to-day life. Everyone deserves to have a real life that they’re proud of.
