DIY or the Pros: How Should You Move?

Moving is a big undertaking. Yet, it’s something that people do all the time. If you are getting ready to make a move, you might be wondering if you should do this task yourself or call in some professional movers.

There are pros and cons to both choices. Below are some questions to ask yourself that may help you decide whether you want to do this task yourself or have some help.

How Much Stuff Do You Have to Move?

If you don’t have a lot of stuff and it will only take you a few trips to get it from one place to another, then you might consider doing it yourself. You may need to have some friends or family members help with lifting the heavy furniture, but other than that, you can get this task accomplished with relative ease.

On the other hand, if you have a ton of stuff to move and it will take you several trips with a truck and/or a trailer, you might want to call in the pros. They will have a larger vehicle that can accommodate more things, which will require less trips to get you out of one home and into another.

How Far Are You Moving?

Another thing to consider is how far you are moving. If it’s just across town, then doing it yourself is the better option. It may take several trips to accomplish, but you’ll get all of your belongings there with little to no trouble.

If you are planning a move to another city or half-way across the country, then having pros help is in your best interest. Again, they have a larger truck, which means they can transport more stuff. In addition, the truck is often enclosed, which means your stuff will be protected from the elements and potential thieves.

It is possible to rent a truck to help you move to another city, but then you have to worry about how you are going to transport your everyday-driving vehicles, as well as having to drive an incredibly large, bulky moving truck. When you work with the pros to move a long distance, all you need to be concerned with is getting to your new home safely. They’ll take care of everything else for you.

Do You Have a Budget?

If you have a limited budget or are looking to save some money on your move, then you’ll want to move on your own. You can save a lot by getting boxes from stores or friends and packing them yourself. Again, you may need to enlist the help of friends or family to help with the heavy stuff, but buying them beer and pizza to help is a lot cheaper than paying pros.

If you aren’t worried about money and you really don’t want to pack your belongings by yourself, then hiring pros is in your best interest. They will provide and pack the boxes and load the truck. All you have to do is make sure they haven’t forgotten anything.

How Soon Do You Need to Move?

Packing and moving your contents on your own means that you can do it when it’s convenient for you. You can start late in the afternoon or early in the morning and go late into the evening. You get to make the schedule and decide what works best for you.

When you hire pro movers, they will have a set schedule that you need to adhere to. They may do their best to make it work for you, but more often than not, you are at their mercy. If you have some time to spare, this could be a great option. If you don’t, then you’ll want to move on your own.

It’s All Up to You

When it comes to deciding if you should move on your own or hire a professional, it will come down to personal preference and how much work you want to do.
